The Amazing Chocolate Hills of Bohol, Philippines The wonderful sight of these 1,776 hills like mounds of chocolate spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometres in Carmen, Bohol, Philippines is as diverse from waterfall spectacle as it has its own story to tell. Cited as the Geological Movement of the country and is also known as one of the Eight Wonders of the World, this tourist attraction is wrapped up with legends on how these marvellous hills came into existence. The first legend tells of a story of two giants who squabbled and hurled rocks and boulders at each other; their mess became chocolate hills. The second myth tells of a story of a giant Arogo who fell in love with Aloya whose untimely demise caused Arogo to burst into tears due to so much pain and misery. When his tears dried up, chocolate hills were formed. The third, tells of a town floundered with plague when a voracious giant carabao ate all the crops. The angry townspeople gathered all the spoiled food; the carabao devoured them all; the giant carabao defecated leaving behind him mounds of feces, when dried became chocolate hills. Another legend was told about a gluttonous giant named Miguel who ate everything. When Miguel fell in love with the beautiful Adrianna, he wanted to lose weight just to win her affection so he excreted everything he had eaten. The faecal matter covered the land and formed into chocolate hills. Amusing folklore told their stories about these world-renowned cone-shaped chocolate hills, the nature’s expression of beauty, mystery, and romance that gave the tale verisimilitude. One could view the magnificent hills at its 210 feet above the ground view deck. Climbing the 214 steps towards the view deck and reaching to the top is a rewarding exercise.
