The Amblypygi 0001 The Amblypygi, otherwise known as the whip spider, belongs to the class Arachnida. “Amblypygid” means “blunt rump” which refers to the fact that they lack a tail. This species is found in tropical and subtropical climates, although some are subterranean. They prefer tight, dark spaces in humid environments. These Amblypygids are harmless to humans. They have no venomous fangs and rarely bite. However they can use their pedipalps to grab objects and cause a thorn-like punture wound. The Amblypygi can range from 3 to 23.6 inches is size measured by legspan. They have poor eyesight however there are sensors on the body, similar to a praying mantis, that are used to capture prey. While most animals use their six legs to walk, the amblypygi use their front 2 legs as sensors. Amblypygids will consume any type of insect. They only need to feed once a week, and can last 2 or 3 more weeks without feeding again. Uncommon to arachnids, the amblypygids show signs of social behavior. A study from Cornell University observed a mother communicating with her young by caressing them with her two front legs. This was reciprocated to the mother and other siblings.
