The American Bar Association is advocating support of the UN - TopicsExpress

The American Bar Association is advocating support of the UN Disability Treaty. This is a note the organization sent to its members, targeting outreach to Missouri Senator Blount. Though the Treaty wasnt called to the Senate Floor last week, there will be another chance after the August recess. Just a few more votes are needed. Thanks ABA for your work! Here is note from ABA: Two-and a half months ago my grandson Roark was born with a disability. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been too surprised -- he is my 7th grandchild, and 15 percent of all individuals have some disability, so the odds were edging up in my family. Now I take the disability treaty personally. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) would ensure the protection of the human rights of Americans with disabilities and their families traveling to or working in other countries, including 5.5 million American veterans who have a disability. I want Roark and others who live with disabilities to be able to travel around the world like I have and like his parents have. And I want them to hold their heads high and be greeted with appropriate accommodations abroad, just as they are in our country, where the ADA has been the law of the land for nearly 25 years. Today is the national call-in day! Chances are that you have a close family member or friend who lives with a disability. But, even if you don’t, I ask that you take this personally, because as I learned recently, that can change in an instant. Take a moment right now to call your senator to ask him or her to ratify the disability treaty. Information on how to do that quickly and efficiently is displayed on the right, including talking points and contact information for your senator. If you would like more information on the CRPD, please go to: ambar.org/crpd. (Supporters only need 3 more votes for ratification. This communication is only going to ABA members in those states whose senators have not yet decided how they will vote.) Just one phone call today can make a tremendous difference!
