The American Founders, Turkeys and the Red Sea There are several interesting facts about the formation of this country that many people forget. One of the more humorous ones is that Benjamin Franklin did not want the Eagle to be our national bird. He didn’t like eagles because they were scavengers and thought them to be low class birds. He wanted the Turkey to be the national bird because of how clever and elusive the wild turkeys were. Thomas Jefferson also disagreed with was the national seal. The national seal is the eagle holding the arrows and the olive branch. Jefferson wanted something very different. The national seal he proposed was the Israelites crossing the parted Red Sea. He thought it was far more appropriate. He thought the eagle was a militaristic symbol and wanted the national seal to reflect the idea that United States was embarking on a course of freedom. He also hoped that by including the image of the crossing of the Red Sea, America would keep the idea that freedom came from God alone in the minds of the people.
