The American Red Cross is helping people get back on their feet in Colorado by providing shelter, food, relief supplies and comfort to thousands of people forced from their homes by flash flooding. • As many as 400 people stayed in 14 shelters Tuesday night in Colorado. • More than 640 trained disaster workers are supporting shelters, evacuation centers and relief centers. • The Red Cross has mobilized more than 20 food trucks and more than ten truck loads of relief supplies including personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, rakes, tarps, shovels, flashlights, gloves, coolers and insect repellant. • The Red Cross is handing out supplies at local relief centers and providing additional recovery support. • Working with community partners, the Red Cross has served more than 10,700 meals and snacks. • Red Cross workers have provided more than 2,400 health and mental health services including emotional support and replacing prescription medications and eyeglasses. • The Red Cross continues to work closely with local emergency management officials and the Colorado National Guard to help ensure people get the help they need. • Access to some communities is difficult due to flood waters and damaged roads. As flooded areas begin to re-open, the Red Cross will be there to assess the damage, distribute clean up supplies and support a recovery effort that will take weeks and months. We’re already planning for that effort now. Flooding has also caused numerous evacuations in New Mexico and Texas and Red Cross workers are also helping people in those states, providing shelter, meals and comfort for those affected. • In Texas and New Mexico, about 15 people spent Tuesday night in shelters. • In New Mexico, the Red Cross has shelters open and resources deployed around the state in response to reports of flooding and evacuations. Red Cross workers are assessing the damages in counties throughout New Mexico. • In Texas, the Red Cross is operating and supporting shelters throughout the affected area and working with The Salvation Army to distribute meals to those in need. • The Red Cross is also supporting people affected by floods in Utah and Arizona, and preparing for potential flooding in Nebraska.
