The American composer Terry Riley turns 79 today. Rileys seminal work In C launched the Minimalist movement in Western classical music 50 years ago when it premiered in 1964. His music has reached beyond the classical world into the popular culture influencing bands like Curved Air, SOFT MACHINE and The Who to the whole Electronic Dance Music scene of today . The Who song Baba ORiley (aka Teenage Wasteland) is a direct reference to Terry and the iconic synthesizer intro was Pete Townshends attempt to mimic his work. For me, some of my favorite music of his is the string quartet music he wrote for Kronos Quartet. In the late 60s and 70s Terry would do these marathon keyboard improvisations with tape loop delay systems. I found this cool vintage footage of him performing back in the day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Riley
