The Annual Schools Boat Race 2014 That once each year, the gentlemanly pride of each of South Africas leading schools for boys convene at an agreed venue in a trial of strength and wits, to participate in a race for eight-oared boats over a distance of six-and-one-third kilometres. -The SASRU Boat Race Challenge On December the 5th and 6th 2014 our King Edward first eight will compete in the annual schools boat race held on the Cowie River in Port Alfred. The schools boat race was started in 2000 and is seen as an elite and prestigious event on the schools racing calendar. Not many schools can claim to have won the race and there is always an air of expectation when a previous champion, like us, boats for the event. The boat race is modelled on the Oxford, Cambridge Universities Boat Race and provides an opportunity to test a crew’s endurance and recovery in a gruelling two day event. Unlike the standard 2000 meter racing that school crews are used to, Boat Race requires crews to race a heads race on the Friday and a Finals race on the Saturday over a 6.3 km course. In essence the race is about endurance and rhythm, with the coxswain of each boat playing a huge role in his choice of line and water on the river. This year, we are hoping to do better than our eighth placed finish last year. We are still uncertain of the quality of crews from the coastal regions but the boys have been training hard in preparation and if spirit and will are anything to go by we are certainly in with a chance to improve on last year’s result. Our King Edward VII 1st 8 crew for Boat Race 2014 is: Tristan Peel; Liam Schoeman; Andrew Webster; Marcus Meurs; Thabelo Masutha; Jason Webster; Riccardo Da Silva; Bryce Vos and Keean Mitchell. Reserve: Luke Campkin- Smith. Wishing TEAM RED the very best for Boat Race 2014. Strenue Go School!
