The Apostle Paul was a man of three worlds: born in the Greek city - TopicsExpress

The Apostle Paul was a man of three worlds: born in the Greek city of Tarsus, a citizen of Rome, and brought up as a Pharisee under Rabbi Gamaliel. This makes something Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians all the more interesting: “For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ” (2 Cor 4:6). “Light” was a key word for the Jews as they were called to be a “Light to the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps 119:105). “The LORD is my light and my salvation” (Ps 27:1) “In Your light we see light” (Ps 36:9). “Knowledge” and wisdom is what the Greeks sought going back to Socrates, Plato and Aristotle and in Paul’s day with the Epicureans and the Stoic philosophers. “The Greeks search for wisdom…” (1 Cor 1:22). And “Glory” was what the Romans sought, the glory of Rome, the glory of battle, a glorious death. Paul, the man of three worlds, says that all the Light, Knowledge and Glory that the world is seeking after can only be found in one place, “in the Face of Christ” (2 Cor 4:6).
