The Aquarium. When the first fish dies, the girl wails, and your wife finds a small cardboard box. You put the fish in the box, and the family processes silently out the front door to a spot under a tree where you dig a hole, place the box and, while the girl cries fitfully, say a few remembrances and a short prayer asking God to take care of the beloved pet who once lived in a carnival. Years later, the old fish live in filth, and, when one dies, you are asked to remove it. The girl, now a young woman, notes that the fish lived a long time and walks away. You wrap the old fish in a paper towel and leave it by the trashcan for the raccoon who would dig it up anyway.
