The Araripe manakin (Antilophia bokermanni) is a strikingly beautiful, but critically endangered bird subject to continuing pressure from agriculture and the ongoing development of recreational facilities within its known range. Discovered only in 1996 in the Araripe uplands of Ceará, Brazil. Its only known breeding range was thought to be but a small 28km2 / 17 square mile tract where a theme park was built nearby in 2000. As of 2010, it was presumed that only about 800 individuals existed in the wild. In 2012, it was very happily discovered in a brand new locality up on top of the Araripe plateau giving conservationists hope that the distribution and numbers of this rare beauty may be at least slightly greater than previous estimates. The photos are the Male and Female. The females of this species are olive green with pale green underparts and a smaller, less prominent green colored frontal tuft.
