The Arkansas Department of Health is advising the public not to eat fish caught in the Plum Bayou area during an investigation and clean-up. Thursday, the health department was contacted about debris contaminated with diesel fuel being dumped into Plum Bayou, located in Altheimer off U.S. 79 in Jefferson County. As a precaution, the department is asking people not to eat the fish until the investigation is complete. There have been no reports of any illness or ill-effects associated with this spill. Current water sample tests indicate no anticipated adverse health effects to humans. This is a precautionary fish consumption advisory and is in effect while the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality oversees cleanup of diesel fuel that was found in the area. The ADH will lift the precautionary fish consumption notice after successful completion of cleanup has been confirmed. Details: Contact the Arkansas County Health Unit at Stuttgart (870-673-1609) or DeWitt (870-946-2934); or the Jefferson County Health Unit in Pine Bluff at 870-535-2142.
