The Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts and the Local Selection Committee (LSC) for CNM seek an artist or artist team to create a site-specific commission project. The LSC is interested in commissioning artwork that will engage students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the CNM Main Campus in a way that speaks to ideas of education, community, transformation, and success. The LSC would like a work that is monumental in scale and would serve as a meeting place or identifiable location in a new system of wayfinding on campus—a landmark gathering point, perhaps. Other things the LSC would like you to think about: a project that might potentially incorporate shade and/or seating; a design that might be inspiring or thought-provoking and/or offer visual contrast to the angular architectural style of the beautiful CNM campus; and the idea of using as much locally sourced material and labor as possible. Consider the CNM vision, “Changing lives, building community.” The faculty, staff and students at CNM are proud of their achievements, and want this project to reflect the hard work and passion they’ve put into building their community. The site, located at the Center of CNM’s Main Campus, near downtown Albuquerque, is at the hub of campus activity, situated along major pedestrian walkways connecting the north and south campuses, and east and west entrances to the campus. The work should be designed to provide a center-point in an open area to the southwest of the existing Student Resources Center (SRC). The SRC, completed in 2010, houses the campus Library, tutoring center, student computer labs and Information Technology offices, and exemplifies the architectural style conceived for recent and future buildings (photos will illustrate this point). The current paved pathway features undulating edges, colored concrete, and a textured surface and is shaded by deciduous trees. Softscape features include native, low-water-use groundcover, small shrubs, and colored gravel. Benches encourage informal outdoor gatherings or getaway places. Underground water, power and data are available. To the west of the site, an outdoor, in-ground amphitheater will take advantage of a existing natural hillside and provide space for performances and events. To the south, another future building will replace the current portables and parking lot, creating an aesthetically pleasing, pedestrian friendly collegiate environment where students, faculty, staff, and community come together to share and celebrate learning, growth, and development.
