The Art of Mindfulness I remember the days when anyone into good nutrition was a health food nut and cartoons depicted yoga practitioners as twisted up into knots and helpless to get out of it. These days both practices are common in our culture. So what do i see lately in the LiveSmart health ads in the local paper? Mindfulness: the art of keeping ones mind in the here and now. Of course we cant be anyplace else but here and now, but our minds can go to all kinds of mental spaces. Lets say im driving my car down a busy road, watching out for traffic but also looking around, listening to the radio, smoking a cigarette, and talking to a friend. Meanwhile, im thinking of other things. Thats just the opposite of mindfulness. Mindfulness is doing one thing at a time and putting ones whole being into that one thing, then going on to another thing, and another. That way were always alive to our lives, not spacing out or compulsively rehashing some emotional issue. It can be very powerful. According to the LiveSmart section of my local paper, mindfulness helps sharpen attention, inspires creative thinking, is a calming influence on work and life and reduces stress and anxiety. Like the man said, chop wood, carry water; dont wobble. Yes, this has been an ad for the art of mindfulness. Be mindful today!
