The Ashley Wilcox Story By Melissa Letourneau Following a difficult divorce, one of Ashleys children had began to develop behavioral issues, and the Clark County School District required he be enrolled in special education classes. Ashley complied, but it wasnt long afterwords Ashley learned through her son that his teacher made a habit of physically touching him in a manner that was against CCSD Policy, and that she was not only uncomfortable with, but felt was completely inappropriate. After attempting to address the situation with the school district, everything changed. This instructor [who must have realized her actions opened the school district up to a valid law suit with the young mother should she have taken it upon herself to sue the school] immediately began to levy false allegations against her and her family that have ended up with all of Ashleys children being taken away from her, and now even criminal charges being brought against her and her new husband. In fact, their unwillingness to take a plea for crimes they have not committed has only motivated the state to continue to add one felony charge after another onto their case - for things as ridiculous as taking their children on a vacation to ride ATVs at the dunes. The Wilcox is just one case of many many cases in which neighbors, our friends, and the people we love, are being persecuted by the justice system for a variety of reasons. Sometimes demonizing someone helps the government to avoid civil suits. Sometimes its to make an example of someone to send a message to others in the community. But more often than not, getting a conviction can become necessary simply to justify money spent on people and resources that went into the investigation before it got to court. I believe its a combination of these issues for the Wilcox. And while its just another day at the office for those involved in prosecuting this young couple, theyre literally completely destroying not only their lives, but the lives of their children who have all been stolen from them, theyre destroying their reputation in the community as they have both lost their jobs over the state charging them with felonies and labeling them common criminals, not to mention the tremendous mental and emotional toll it has had, which words really can not begin to express.
