The Associated Press — which recently had a large cache of its phone records seized by the U.S. Justice Department as part of an overreaching probe of an information leak — reported this week that some of President Barack Obama’s political appointees in departments such as Health and Human Services, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Labor Department are using secret email accounts to conduct official business. While the White House says the practice has been used by other administrations, it flies in the face of Obama’s transparency pledge and his exhortations that people should trust the federal government. It also represents another roadblock for journalists to act as watchdogs of an administration that increasingly looks like the Nixon administration with its enemies lists, power grabs and stonewalling.
