The Audiovore Charlemagne Record Exchange Picks Of the Week: 1. Sun Ra- Outer Spaceways Incorporated (1968) - Today is Sun Ras 100th birthday, so what better way to celebrate than checking out this exclusive Record Store Day reissue of Mr. Blounts classic 1968 LP Outer Spaceways Incorporated? If youre not familiar with Sun Ras work then this is a great jumping off point into some of his heavier/freer music, but will require both an open mind and open ears to truly get into the groove of this intergalactic jazz ruckus. Not for the faint of heart, its a challenging listen, but will issue a great reward for those willing to sit with it for a while. One of 1500 copies and the first time on vinyl in thirty years. Space Is The Place!!! ($29.98) 2. Guns N Roses- Appetite For Destruction (1987) - Love em or hate em, few albums of the 1980s rocked as hard as this debut LP from LAs preeminent bad boys Guns N Roses. In fact, I specifically remember getting this on cassette (!) when it first came out and being somewhat intimidated by the sheer force of the bands bad attitude and nasty guitar riffs, not to mention the now iconic cover art. But that was nothing compared to the thrill I got having to hide it from my mom so she wouldnt discover the distasteful and violent cartoon imagery contained on the albums inner sleeve. Needless to say it was love at first sight and I still think its one of the greatest hard rock albums to ever come out of America and still sounds as fresh and raw as it did the first time I listened to it on my Walkman so many years ago. Couple that with the fact that Welcome To The Jungle remains one of the greatest album openers of all time and youve got yourself a winner. Good stuff. ($24.98) 3. Johnny Nash- I Can See Clearly Now (1972) - Nothing says summer quite like this LP of irie island vibes from American pop/reggae crossover artist Johnny Nash. And although he started his career (like his life) well away from Jamaica, few American artists did as much to help bring the rhythms of reggae into American consciousness as he did on this beautifully rendered ode to the island nations musical heritage. Coupling stunning originals like I Can See Clearly Now and How Good It Is with a slew of early Bob Marley tunes (including Stir It Up, Guava Jelly, and Comma Comma), the album comes off like a giant ray of sunshine raining down on the sandy beaches of the Caribbean, but with enough carefully crafted pop production to appeal to a US audience who had never heard anything quite like it before. As one of the great soul-stirring albums of the 1970s, if you ever find yourself feeling blue on a bright sunny day few musical journeys will lift your spirit quite as high as this remarkable LP. ($4.98) 4. Grace Jones- Warm Leatherette (1980) - Although most people remember her from her role as Bond villain May Day in A View To A Kill, Grace Jones actually had a rather fruitful career in the late-1970s and early-1980s as a kind of postmodern chanteuse/model and produced two of the most stunning albums of the era with her classic LPs Warm Leatherette and Nightclubbing. As a native Jamaican, she infused dub-wise rhythms (courtesy of Sly & Robbie) with angular guitar work and a New Wave sensibility that seemed to rest somewhere between the Talking Heads and Lee Scratch Perry, but with the deadpan delivery of a non-Teutonic Nico singing disco hits on the floor of Studio 54. It was a strange brew, but one that worked, especially with her wildly eclectic covers of Roxy Musics Love Is The Drug, Tom Pettys Breakdown, The Pretenders Private Life, and The Normals classic post-punk title track. Always a fun listen and one of my favorite albums of all time. ($24.98) 5. Wings- Band On The Run (1973) - McCartneys greatest post-Beatles triumph. Recorded in Lagos, Nigeria. Enough said. ($14.98) *All albums are located in The Audiovore section by the front desk. Support your local record stores!!! If you got ears, you gotta listen.- Don Van Vliet
