The Australian Greens have confirmed they will call for a national inquiry into the abuse of people with disabilities - particularly those in institutions - after a joint ABC/Fairfax investigation into issues in the sector. Greens Senator Rachel Siewert was to table a motion in Federal Parliament today to call for an independent national inquiry into the sector, while former National Disability Commissioner Graeme Innes has backed calls for such a probe. We have a wave of these cases which are going to emerge over the next few years and we need to be preparing for that, he said. And we need to be ready to address it and proactively change the culture in these organisations, or changing the organisations themselves. The calls come after a the joint ABC/Fairfax investigation levelled a series of allegations at disability services provider Yooralla.
