The Azores are a great place for extreme sports and adventure travel, but while you get your adrenaline fix rock climbing or swimming with dolphins you have to remember that it’s always good to leave a day or so to learn about the place you’re visiting and take great pictures. If you aren’t talented enough to simultaneously repel down into a canyon and post on instagram at the same time don’t worry, Greenzone is your chance to record where you’ve been. While there are planned stops, the guides were also pretty much happy to stop whenever asked when we saw something random we liked too, a benefit of a small group tour as opposed to a giant bus. Speaking of buses, they can’t go off roading like the jeeps can for a more adventurous tour, and they can’t (or at least they really are not supposed to) go up on the super narrow dirt roads around a crater like the jeeps can. Sure maybe a small rental car could do it, but if you saw the terrain you’d believe me when I say going it on your own is not the best idea. Chances are if you try to drive yourself, these guys are going to end up having to come rescue you, so might as well just go with them in the first place. All the guides are local and know what they’re doing, and their vehicles are made for that kind of trip.
