The BDRI finishes the first year in Galicia with fantastic results to contribute the knowledge and conservacion of cetacean species in these waters. Thank you to everyone who joined us in 2014 and participated in the field research! During the last 7 months of boat based observations we spent 70 days at sea onboard the Tyba with a total of 146 cetacean sightings (1794 individuals): 139 bottlenose encounters from April to November 2014, 4 common dolphin and just 2 harbour porpoise encounters (the low presence of these last two species is reflective of the distribution of our surveys focused in the presence and behaviour of bottlenose dolphins inside of the Arousa Firth). We also participated in several strandings of several species: common dolphin, harbour porpoise, pilot whale, rissos dolphin, fin whale, grey seal, and loggerhead sea turtle. Plus we participated reseleasing a loggerhead sea turtle after a 5 months period of rehabilitation - so all in all a notable year.
