The General Register Office in Ireland have put their civil registration index records for births, marriages & deaths online (for free) with the promise of more historic records to follow. All of Ireland is covered up to 1922 & the south of Ireland post 1922. The website is at irishgenealogy.ie/ but check out the attached link below first.
