The BIG TIME ARTISTS and COMIC BOOKS didnt inspire me.....at least not as much as the little guys. A lot of people ask me if I am embarrassed to show my early work and sketches. The answer is NO!!!! If anything, I think that my early drawings should be MUCH MORE INSPIRATIONAL. WHY? Because they werent that good... they were AVERAGE. I would never look at a National Basketball Association (NBA) team and think... hmm... there are 12 guys on that bench and I want to be the #1 spot. No..... I look at the 12 guys on that bench and go.... WOW... I could score just ONE MORE POINT than the LAST GUY on that bench. Thats how I got my start. I sent my work to the books that I thought needed the most HELP. The ones I thought that could use me. And thats how I got the first response that STARTED MY CAREER!!!! Marvel put me on a back-up story that nobody wanted to do in a book that no one really wanted to read. It would be the equivalent to working in the mail room. It wasnt some glamorous first job... but it got me in the DOOR. I was (then) officially a Marvel employee and they were PAYING ME to draw. Anyway, I thought I would share this story with you because someone brought in Coyote #11 (which had my FIRST published artwork) for me to sign at the Image Comics expo the other day... so I opened it up to find my page and snapped a picture so I could share it with you good people. I did a little digging and found the full page from the comic book AND the ORIGINAL pencils... MY FIRST PUBLISHED PIECE. So, I hope you read this story and are inspired that you can start from the bottom and STILL reach your dreams and goals. Just go after it!!!! TODD
