The BJP and many other Hindu institutions have made a huge issue of Cow slaughter. My observation may not go well with some of my friends but I feel like stating my opinion about the same. There are instances in the Olden days India when the best bull was slaughtered whenever a guest happened to visit a house and contrary to the modern claim that the Brahmins did not eat the beef, the Brahmins of the olden days took the beef. For both of these statements, I can cite the references that Swami Vivekananda has made. Its funny how some of our Hindu movements have become very selective about what they read from their role models. Now most of the orthodox Hindus and Hindus in general do not take beef. Thats fine. But the Muslims and the Christians take beef. And not only that even certain section of Hindus themselves take beef. This being the case I find it very hard to appreciate the idea of glorifying the issue of cow slaughter as a major political and national issue. Its in fact a non issue. Cow slaughter can only be banned on humanitarian and compassion grounds and not as a specific religious sentiment. I really dont find much difference between cow slaughter and say cutting the head of a sheep or a swine. Moreover I feel vegetarianism and choice of food should be left to the discretion of the individual concerned. I know its hard to let go of our sentiments but we are no one to enforce. These things should never be political. Its enough for our politicians and religious leaders to focus on human development. With the growth of individual all good things will manifest in Society. As Swami Vivekananda said, some people speak of non violence but they dont mind cutting their brothers throat for money or to cheat someone. This applies well to our politicians. I feel like telling them - work for human improvement.
