The Baku Court of Grave Crimes chaired by Judge Rauf Aliyev April 21 held a preparatory meeting on the case head of the Election Monitoring Center and democracy training (TSMVOD), executive director of the NGO Suleymanli Bashir and the head of the Public Association for International Cooperation Volunteers (MSBVW) Elnur Mammadov. They are accused of Clause 5 of the Criminal Code - tax evasion, illegal business, abuse of office, embezzlement on a large scale and official forgery. All the three men deny the charges. This criminal case was opened at the end of October 2013, December 17, Mammadli was taken into custody, while the other two defendants are under house arrest. At the preparatory meeting Mammadli was put in an iron cage. The court session caused increasing attention from the public, as well as foreign diplomatic corps. The judge dismissed all the petitions, except permission to Mammadli to sit with the lawyers during the trial and to call additional witnesses. The consideration of the hearing on the merits is scheduled for April 28.
