The Bangladesh Government recently challenged that the statistics - TopicsExpress

The Bangladesh Government recently challenged that the statistics on enforced disappearances. One Minister claimed that it would be more appropriate to term the phenomena as abductions rather enforced disappearances. The Minister also claimed that the number of abductions by officials was inflated, but did not deny the existence. This is worrying on a number of levels. Perhaps the Minister might want to focus on ratifying the UN Convention first. Not wishing to be disrespectful to a Government Minister its hard to view his remarks as anything but idiotic. Whether one terms an incident as an abduction or a disappearance is quite irrelevant. It is a state sponsored arbitrary act and a grave human rights violation. The State should investigate rather than challenging the numbers and terminology.
