The Basics of how a cable signal reaches the subscribers This is Just a brief description of the basic flow and process of getting a signal from a provider (NBC,ESPN,DISNEY, ETC ,ETC) to a Subscriber. It does not contain every detail about the modulation and and Transportation of RF signals Nor does it contain any specific procedures that a MSO may use. The signal the CATV company feeds to the subscribers is received in the headend in a variety of different ways from over the air broadcast to Down link satellite dishes even Fiber optic cables .It is then transported to the Head End where the channels are modulated and combined with other channels and fwd docsis channels. They then travel to a Fwd optical Transmitter where the RF is turned into light and transmitted out to a Node via Fiber optic cable. Once the light arrives at the node it hits a FWD RCVR that turns the light back in to RF.The node module then amplifies the RF and sends it out over a Coaxial cable to either a System amp or LE depending on the application/placement in the network. The Distribution amps then amplify the RF signal to compensate for the attenuation of the cable that it traveled over to get there. They then send the rf out over another coax Cable (feeder) to the taps. The taps then take the incoming RF signal and send certain amounts based on Tap value down the drops to the subscriber premise where it is turned into a picture or data depending on the CPE that it is attached to. THIS IS NOT AN INCLUSIVE GUIDE TO THE OPERATION OF A HFC NETWORK THIS IS AS BASIC AS IT GETS IN TERMS OF THE MODULATION AND TRANSPORTATION OF THE RF SIGNAL.
