The Battle of Fart Scroll in the Edo Era has its predecessors in its theme. They are Fukutomi Monogatari or The Tale of Fortune/The Fortune Seeker and Fukutomi-chyojya Monogatari or The Tale Fortune Seeker. They have the same storyline. The Tale of Fortune of The Fortune Seeker has two scrolls: the first one tells and depicts the old poor man who gets rich and the second scroll depicts the man who gets poorer. The first man is Hide-take, who is a fart artist but poor; his wife asks him to visit the shrine, which eventually brings him a great luck. The second man is also poor. He came to know about Hidetake’s wealth and asks him to tell how he can get rich. But the second man can hardly manage it and gets poorer. The scrolls we have now were painted by Mitsunobu the Tosa Governor[Tosa is present day Kohchi Prefecture]. The painter lived in the 15th century. However, in the days of Toba Priest(1053-1103) there was reference to Hidetake by his daughter, which is in one of comic illustrations. This suggests that The Tale of Fortune of The Fortune Seeker could be dated back to the 13th century, though there was no tangible thing to prove this. Sometani Yuko made the study by comparing the words in the two texts. She hits the clear demarcation between them by the distinction they have in 「才」(ざい)と「囈」(げい)or “talent” and “art.” The word 「囈」(げい)or art can date up to the 17th century. dcu.repo.nii.ac.jp/?action=repository_uri...
