The Battle of Penang - 28th Oct, 1914 Today marks the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of Penang. A German cruiser SMS Emden sank the Russian cruiser Zemchug and the French destroyer Mousquet on 28th Oct 1914 off the coast of Penang. 88 Russian naval officers died and another 121 wounded in the sea battle and people in Penang were rushing to the shore to help the victims. A solemn memorial service was held this morning in front of the Zemchug memorial at the Western Rd Christian Cemetery.
