The Beach Boys made their national television debut on this day - TopicsExpress

The Beach Boys made their national television debut on this day fifty years ago on The Ed Sullivan Show. Clad in their iconic striped shirts, the group performed two songs, the hot-rodders anthem I Get Around, which had topped the US charts earlier that July, and Wendy, a track taken from their All Summer Long album which was later issued as the B-side to Good Vibrations in Europe. Barely three months later, Brian Wilson suffered a severe anxiety attack aboard a flight to Houston where the band were due to play. Brought on by the stress of near-constant travel and composing, Wilson quit touring to focus on songwriting and production, with singer/guitarist Glenn Campbell stepping in as temporary replacement until the success of his own burgeoning solo career meant that he, too, had to bow out.
