The Beauty Supply First off, I didnt expect her to touch me. I thought I was alone at the bus stop this chilly morning. Out of nowhere, an attractive, middle aged housewife taps me on the arm and asks in a thick, eastern european accent if I was waiting for the bus. Im a little startled, people generally dont touch in New York City and for good reason: Its New York for goodness sake! But here she was smiling and then I said smiling, yes, and my, wasnt it chilly? She says, good. I go beauty store. You knock when bus comes. Ok? And then to show me how, she mimes a little knock in the air and points to the beauty supply store behind the bus stop. I nod and knock back. Ive studied mime, surely she was impressed. I have now been called into service, and with what I hoped was a sly grin said, maybe? I dont know, what if I need something from the beauty store? She stops, takes a moment and sees that Im joking and laughs, okay, okay!, and turns for the store. She turns and takes about two steps and I see the bus down the block. I shout, Hey, the bus, its coming! She turns back disappointed, oh no, I guess no beauty today. For me, its early yet, but it looks like Ive already found lots of beauty. Happy Friday! xoxo -RSH
