The Beauty of the Butterfly Recently I had the privilege of discovering a simple yet profound lesson. It is truly amazing what we learn from nature and each other if we simply allow ourselves to open up to the beauty contained within and without. When visiting the Big Island of Hawaii and strolling through the jungle, I stumbled upon a butterfly sitting on a leaf. This moment appeared, in my experience of life, as quickly as it disappeared. It was as if the universe was gently reminding me to pay attention to the details. Fortunately, I was able to photograph, observe, and share it with you, the reader and observer. What was the lesson I learned from this beautiful and colorful butterfly? At times I find myself being burdened by psychological time and expectation. An expectation or pressure of how my life should be, how much money I should have, what position I should hold, how my body should look like or the relationship I should have with another. All of these expectations measured by psychological time have only resulted into unnecessary distress. Because I don’t have this or that, I am anxious, regretful, and to remedy that I become controlling and authoritative with my thoughts. Maybe when I have this and that I will be happy. That would be nice, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Look at where you are now and where you were before. Externally, you may now have the car, apartment, job or relationship you thought would make you happy, then. However, now, you have new problems to worry about, new problems to address. So how does one overcome that? Stop! Stop now. Stop thinking, for thought has caused your problems. Simply take a moment to be in the moment. Be here ... right now ... Look at this beautiful butterfly and observe its details. Realize the truth of how it wasn’t always a butterfly. Before it became a beautiful butterfly and took flight with its amazingly colorful wings it was simply a caterpillar. A caterpillar who weaved itself a cocoon and with tremendous energy, patience and faith, it under went certain transformation to become the more beautiful version of itself without technology or outside intervention. Similarly, you are also in the process of becoming a more beautiful version of yourself. Have faith in the process, be patient and allow yourself time to find your wings. Mahalo.
