The Bergdahl affair is a trying one for all concerned. I understand the criticism that the prisoner exchange encourages the enemy to capture our soldiers but if the alternative is to execute them, Im not sure that POW status is worse. I dont like that the President officially bypassed Congress but its disingenuous for Congress to claim complete ignorance. The fact that Congressional leadership had been briefed and had not put up a public squawk before the exchange suggests that the Presidents claim that publicity would be a death sentence for Bergdahl was something the Republican leadership also believed. The claims of desertion cant be tested adequately by a court martial without Bergdahls participation and it didnt seem likely that the Taliban would let him take off for a few weeks for a trial. All things considered, its a tough call. I cant say the President was wrong, but unfortunately I cant say he was right either.
