The Beyond Black History Month Person of the day is Rashad Haughton (born August 6, 1977) is an American writer, film director and screenwriter. He is the older brother of the late R&B singer Aaliyah. Rashad was born on August 6, 1977 in Brooklyn, New York to Diane and Michael Haughton. He and his sister Aaliyah were 17 months apart. When he was 6 years old his family moved to Detroit, Michigan where he and his sister Aaliyah were raised. When it came time for Aaliyah to film the video for her single 4 Page Letter from her 1996 album One in a Million, Rashad would complete the video preparation within two hours[1] while studying at Hofstra University. On the B-side of the 4 Page Letter single, Rashad recorded a song with his sister entitled Death Of A Playa. In February 2002, Queen of the Damned, a film which Aaliyah starred as Queen Akasha, was released. Before its release, Rashad was called upon to re-dub several of his sisters lines during the post-production ADR process. Upon its release, the film debuted at number one. It was also dedicated to Aaliyah, at the end credits it said, in memory of Aaliyah 1979–2001. Rashad was also in talks of producing and releasing several of Aaliyahs unreleased recordings from the Queen of the Damned onto Aaliyahs second Proud is the true story of the only African-American crew to take a Navy warship into combat in World War II, in which Rashad played the role of Naval saxophonist Hank Fields. Rashad also saw the release of his first single, though it was not released in the US: Fork In The Road (with 1200 Techniques), which made it #55 on Australian Charts. The single showcases Rashads vocal ability. Chrysalis is a short film (11 mins) written and directed by Rashad. Rashad appeared at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards to pay tribute to his sister along with Aaliyahs role model Janet Jackson and her producers/songwriters/collaborators and close friends Ginuwine, Missy Elliott, and Timbaland. The awards were presented just 12 days after her death. Rashads father Michael Haughton died in 2012. He is buried next to Aaliyah.
