The Bible is God-inspired to express God’s concerns. What concerns him should concern us. The world is a continuous swirl of human events, thoughts and reactions that God has been watching for thousands of years. “The Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes the son of men; his eyes examine them” (Ps 11:4). We may be unaware of God’s fatherly gaze but the Holy Spirit knows people and life’s intricacies and how to touch the secret springs of human hearts – perhaps from oblique and surprising angles. To preach effectively, we must stand on the platform of the Word. Our divine instructions, like Timothy’s, are to “preach the Word” (2 Tim 4:2) – not a collection of commentaries on it!
