The Bible list of faith heroes in Hebrews 11 shows them as men and women of action. Action did not make them people of faith, but faith made them people of action. Scripture faith is more than for worship occasions. It is a life stance bringing invigorating life from God. Faith is openness to God’s incoming energies, the principle expressed in Psalm 81:10: “Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.” The Hebrew for worship suggests both physical performance and a whole way of life; a life lived on a level of venture in Divine aid. Faith takes the premier place as a credential for service. The imperfection of many Bible heroes is frequently a matter of comment. It is often noted that many Bible notables would not pass as candidates for the ministry today. Scripture is frank, not to prove how saintly people are who belong to the Lord. God is open even about the founding patriarchs. Jacob named Israel, father of the twelve tribes, found favor with God through faith, and certainly nothing else. His belief in God’s faithful promise was without doubt or question; he even perpetrated deceit to inherit it. God honored his faith but not his dishonesty. God bless you today. REINHARD BONNKE
