The Bible says, we are to have no other gods before us (remember the 10 Commandments?)...thats not reference to just little ceramic idols on our shelves...that also includes Worship styles, our personal song preferences (hymns vs. modern praise; drums/guitars vs. piano and organ). Worship is about God, not us. God is the One we worship, so worship is not about our precious praise choruses or precious hymns. If a song is based on Gods Word and theologically correct, it doesnt matter if it is an ancient hymn or a modern song. I am concerned for and troubled by Christians who say I cant worship when we sing those songs, or they use those instruments. I am not alone in my take on this as a pastor...I am convicted and sincerely believe whenever such attitudes exist in our churches (ours too) the people need to see their sin of worship idolatry and repent. The writer in Relevant says it well...We dare not approach the throne of an objectively great, timeless, unchanging and holy God with a consumer mindset that says we can only worship Him if our subjective preferential demands are met. That mindset only robs God of the glory He is due, robs the Church of the encouragement it needs as it fights the true war of faith, and robs us of being encouraged and shaped by the truth of God’s Word as we sing it. I encourage all of us to allow God to examine our hearts on this matter, because there are much greater and more important issues than worship music...there is a world full of people who still do not know Jesus.
