The Bidwell Party was one of the first to heed John Marshs (John Marsh Historic Trust) calls to the Eastern U.S. to head west to capitalize on the agricultural wealth to be had in California. After following his published directions across the deserts of Nevada and the Sierra, they ended up at Marshs Los Meganos Ranch just a stones throw from here in Antioch and earned Marshs enduring enmity by slaughtering several of his prized plow oxen when offered cattle from his herds to feed themselves.
