The Big Conversation today......What should we call older people? Or should we scrap the word old completely? Is it time we stopped referring to someone as old? Age is increasingly becoming just a number for many people. With lots of people in their 60s, 70s and 80s having the time of their lives. Is it time we did away with that dreadful sign outside old peoples homes with those two hunched over figures? The classicist Professor Mary Beard, whos also a TV presenter says that the public should be encouraged to embrace the word old, to combat the stereotype of a hunched little old lady often seen in modern culture. Speaking at the Cheltenham Literary festival , she says that shed like to replace the decrepit figures and Darby and Joan stereotypes in public life. She argues the word old should now become something that fills people with pride. So what name would you suggest we use for the older generation? Are you 60 plus? Are you having the time of your life and growing disgracefully?
