The Big Fight: Guilty Till Proven Innocent? Over 67 per cent of Indian prisoners are under-trials, majority of them under the age of 30. Many are locked up before investigations are over, and several of them end up spending years in jail. One is supposed to be innocent till proven guilty, but thats not how it works out for lakhs of people. Justice delayed here is truly justice denied. Several hundred posts of judges are vacant; there is a demand for more courts to dispose off millions of pending cases. The conditions of overcrowded jails is miserable. Have the judicial and police reforms been caught in red tape? Has Indias justice delivery system failed to deliver? (10 students and two staff guides of Vidyajyoti visit the Tihar jail regularly. Besides helping the inmates with counselling, legal aid and education, the group facilitates Eucharistic celebration and Sacrament of Reconciliation. For me, celebrating a Eucharist and administering Gods compassion in the sacrament of reconciliation in Tihar remain memorable and heart-filling. Had a chance to join the audience/participant of the Big Fight of NDTV last Saturday.
