The Big Moose visited Denver dog parks almost every day---however, in the park by the apartment complex we ONLY used the side labeled for Less Active Dogs (& if you have seen my dogs you KNOW they are ACTIVE.) I did it for a variety of reasons: The Day we arrived it was busy, it was getting to be dusk so visibility wasnt perfect, I was tired, & I didnt want to have to work that hard (supervising interactions) I just wanted a fenced area where my dogs could get the zoomies out of their system after a day of driving. The following days, despite going during full sun we continued to use the wrong side. Because as I watched there was a lot of humans milling around not really interacting with their dogs (& you always get some of that---but in LARGE parks often people tend to walk the perimeter & things keep moving) meanwhile nobody seemed to be watching the dogs. I saw A LOT of inappropriate play that NOBODY was interrupting. One guy (bless his heart) even asked for help as his Boston was being stalked & continuously chased by a Husky--he loudly said that he didnt think his dog was having fun (it wasnt) & could the owner call their dog. Nothing happened. He ended up moving off after trying to interrupt the interaction without getting the results he was looking for. I love dog parks, but you must be ACTIVELY watching , supervising & ready to interrupt as needed. (whether its your dog who is asking for help, or another dog not lovin how your dog plays) People need to educated on what is & is NOT appropriate interactions! Here is a great video from Sue Sternbergs Train to Adopt Program on examples of what is NOT good play for your dog to be practicing. The complex-park had a lot of dogs practicing how to bully others, dogs overly stimulated from the prey-drive practice, & dogs that were fearful & frustrated by the interactions.
