The Big Snip: Edgars move down South (with his pack including a Fred the shusky, Winston and Sophie the Bostons, Chloe the angry cat and his three humans in two vehicles) took us three days of travel and two nights in hotels. Without dogs or in summer we could have done this drive in two days, but we didnt want to add to the risk by driving at night and we thought 6-7 hour days in the car was enough for the dogs. Edgar was not happy about being stuffed in a crate for such long periods of time and I wanted to find some way to keep him entertained. I bought him Yaks milk bones which are said to be indestructible (no toy is) and digestible. I gave him one and within a minute or two he had shattered it into dozens of sharp pieces of shrapnel and proceeded to gobble up quite a few before I got them picked up. The day we arrived in Maple Ridge we ended up taking him in for an emergency appointment and x-rays. He was very sore but the vet was optimistic that they would pass. He was uncomfortable, but they did pass. During her exam the vet noticed that Edgar has an enlarged prostate and she recommended we neuter him sooner rather than later. We had intended to wait till he was 18 mos to give him a chance to finish growing, but this tilted the risk scale in favour of neutering. So yesterday he went in for the big snip. Hes a few ounces lighter and a little sore, but doing well so far. The challenge is going to be to keep him quiet while he heals as he spends most of his days (when hes not comatosed) in a state of perpetual exuberance.
