The Bike Shop Advantage Attention Big Box Shoppers! Planning to buy your next bike from Mega-Mart? Before you do, learn about the advantages of buying from a real bike shop! When buying a bicycle, many people only consider shopping at a big box store like Wal-Mart, Toys-R-Us, Sears, Academy Sports, K-Mart, or somewhere similar. The main reason is that the big box stores offer convenience and a cheap price. But is the deal you get at a big box store a true value? Lets take a closer look at what you actually get when you buy a bike at a big box store versus buying a bike at a dedicated bike shop. Big Box Bike When you buy a bike at big box store, you can pretty much expect to get a complete, assembled, working bike. But, theres more to it than that. The bikes at the big box store are cheaper for a reason. They are made of much cheaper material. Usually heavier, weaker steel or aluminum with poor welds at the joints. The other components on the bikes are of a lower quality as well, which means the performance of the bike will be less than one with better components and it will not last nearly as long. Most bikes from big box stores are prohibitively expensive to repair and are pretty much disposable. Two more problems with big box bikes is that they are usually assembled by whoever works there, certainly NOT a trained bicycle mechanic, and are often not assembled correctly. Additionally, the bikes at big box stores typically do not come in a variety of frame sizes so there is a good chance you will get a bike that is not a perfect fit for you. Riding a bike that doesnt fit is not only uncomfortable, it can actually cause problems with your joints. Bike shop bike The bike you get at a dedicated bike shop comes fully assembled just like the bike from the big box store, but it costs more? Why? To start with, the bike shop bikes are made of higher quality, lighter weight steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber. The joints feature superior welds that provide improved frame strength. Not only are the bikes lighter, and therefore easier to ride, they are also stronger and more durable than their big box counterparts. The components on the bike shop bikes are of higher quality so not only will they provide a smoother ride, the bikes will last a lot longer. And, if the need arises, it is economically feasable to have them repaired. Bike shop bikes are certainly not disposable and usually have a good resale value. Bike shop bikes are assembled by trained bike mechanics so you know they are put together correctly. Also, the sales staff at a bike shop knows how to fit you properly to a bike. A proper fitting bike will provide a much more comfortable ride and you wont run the risk of joint pain and/or injury.
