The Black Watch present donation to cancer charity on behalf of Fijian Lance Corporal’s mother whose son lost his ‘longest’ battle. Major General James Cowan CBE DSO (late Black Watch) General Officer Commanding the Army’s 3rd Division presented a cheque for £6430 to the Beatson Cancer Charity on behalf of Fiji based Mrs Naomi Rika, who donated the monies, the mother of the late Lance Corporal Sevania Tabua who had served with The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland. He died of cancer in December 2012. The cheque was accepted by Megan Stobo of Beatson Cancer Charity. ‘Tabs’ as he was affectionately known had a specialist role joining The Black Watch Reconnaissance (recce) Platoon. He deployed with the Platoon to Northern Ireland, Kenya and Afghanistan. Filipe Tawayaga, a fellow recce soldier and rugby player said: “A true friend too many, he was trusted by all, maintaining a real sense of dedication to both his work and his colleagues. Having been shot in Iraq, injured by an explosion in Afghanistan, he refused to give up and would always seek to be back in the thick of the action. His determination was never more evident than during his fight against cancer. “Unfortunately Lance Corporal Tabua died on 27th December 2012 in Gartnavall Hospital, Glasgow, after losing that last and longest battle. He leaves behind his wife Vivita. His courage in adversity should be an inspiration to all.”
