The Blame Game Genesis 3:9-13 Little children play the blame game. Its his fault! She made me do it. It seems to be rooted in their DNA. But children inherit this response from their parents, who inherited it from mans original parents, Adam and Eve. When God asked Adam, Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? (v.11), his response was to blame Eve (v.12). When God turned the conversation to the woman, asking, What is this that thou hast done? she blamed the serpent (v.13). This inherited trait causes us to blame others and our circumstances for our disobedience. King Saul disobeyed God and offered a sacrifice in the stead of Samuel the prophet. When Samuel asked, What hast thou done? (1 Sam.13:11), the king immediately excused his ill behavior. He blamed the prophet for being late, blamed the people who had scattered, and even blamed the Philistines. Samuel was not impressed with Sauls excuses and said, Thou hast done foolishly (1 Sam.13:13). Rather than playing the blame game, we need to accept personal responsibility for our actions. When the prophet Nathan brought to King Davids attention his sin, the kings humble response was, I have sinned against the Lord (2 Sam.12:13). In similar fashion, Jesus told the parable about a publican who cried out, God be merciful to me a sinner (Lk.18:13). True conversion begins with taking full blame and responsibility for our sin. A clean heart requires an honest admission of our own personal guilt. Read Psalm 51:2-4, for in this text, the psalmist Davids confession reveals the proper response to sin. Do not be a fool by playing the blame game!
