The Boardroom of Newry Town Hall was the very significant venue for a Reception, hosted by Mayor Daire Hughes, to mark 50 years service to Local Government by Councillor Jack Patterson. Jack commenced his 30 year tenure as an employee in 1964, firstly with Newry Urban Council, as a foreman bricklayer and then as Town Inspector. With reorganisation of Local Government in 1973, Jack became Cleansing Supervisor with Newry and Mourne District Council where he remained until his retirement. He was then encouraged to stand as an Independent Councillor for Newry Town in the 1993 Local Government Elections where he succeeded in topping the poll and remains an active Councillor more than 21 years later. Jack’s highlights have been many over the 50 years, but undoubtedly his greatest accolade was being elected as Mayor for the term 2003/2004. The Mayor and Fellow Councillors paid tribute to Jack for his many achievements over this 50 years period. Unveiling a portrait of Councillor Jack Patterson which will hang in the Boardroom of Newry Town Hall, Mayor Hughes said: “On behalf of Newry and Mourne District Council it gives me great pleasure to unveil this portrait in recognition of the tremendous service you have given to Local Government over a 50 year period”
