The Book Café in partnership with the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Applied Art and Craft Association (ZAACA), presents: BOOK CAFE CRAFT FAIR - Celebrating Zimbabwe’s Crafts, Food & Music Saturday 25 October 2014, 11am – 6pm - FREE The October edition of the Book Café Craft Fair is all about celebrating Zimbabwe’s unique crafts; sampling food from different cultures as well as enjoying live music from one of Zimbabwe’s popular Jazz bands; Jabavu Drive. The craft fair which is scheduled for 25th October from 11am is incorporating all things fun and vibrant as Zimbabweans welcome in beautiful summer days. Those who missed out on spring sales are in luck as crafters specializing in home and clothing accessories will be offering unbelievable discounts. The October Craft Fair will also be showcasing ‘ware’ art and wooden sculptures from Matopos, Chivhu, Headlands and Harare, as well as unbeatable discounts on all crafts, from fashion accessories to home and garden crafts. This is the 9th Book Café Craft Fair, with the first held in December 2013, and each one focusing on different themes centered around Zimbabwean crafts, music and authentic culinary experiences. Book Café’s ‘Food As Culture’ project is set to deliver a creative menu made from authentic ingredients culinary enthusiasts would be proud of. Fresh Chapatis will be served with chicken curry made the traditional way; and classic pizzas including Book Café’s newest creation, ‘The Veggie Deluxe’ topped with fresh herbs and roasted vegetables. The ‘Food As Culture’ project primarily aims at providing a platform for food practitioners to develop their craft as well as offer a space for production and delivery of food to local audiences. We believe this creates a space for cultural exchange through the celebration of food as a dynamic form of cultural expression. In the recent past partnerships have been formed with the “Conscious Kitchen” an initiative aiming at promoting a healthy and vibrant community through the consumption of food made from traditional ingredients; and Svinurai Arts, a group from Mutoko who will once again be serving traditional Zimbabwean cuisine. To compliment what is set to be an amazing Saturday afternoon, the Book Café has lined up renowned jazz band Jabavu Drive to perform live from 2pm. Jabavu Drive is led by Phillip Svosve, the amazing saxophonist and lyricist, and includes the Doc Roger Hukuimwe and Timmy Makaya on guitar. The band, whose self-titled album created waves in Zimbabwe, will perform some of their best compositions which cleverly fuse storytelling, Afro Jazz, Tsabatsaba and Shona traditional music. Book Café together with the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe and ZAACA are quickly redefining the experience that art and craft lovers alike have. A deliberate and conscious effort has gone into elevating the craft fair to a showcase of diverse cultural and artistic expression through art, craft, performing arts, and a dynamic culinary platform. This, after all, is what Book Café is all about. The Book Café teamed up with Zimbabwe Applied Art and Craft Association (ZAACA) in December 2013 and later with the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe in March 2014 continue to establish the Book Café Craft Fair as an innovative platform for the promotion and sale of traditional and modern Zimbabwean craft, in a high-traffic venue in the city centre, which is fully engaged in the arts, and attracts thousands of local and visiting music arts-lovers through the year. Book Café Craft Fair firmly embeds the material culture of Zimbabwe into the Book Café’s scope of arts coverage that already includes all genres in the local music scene, theatre, film, books, poetry, stand-up comedy, fashion and a wide range of arts dialogue. Since 2012 the venue has seen steady development of its facilities, serving an ever-widening cultural programme to the local community of music, poetry, comedy, discussions, workshops, film screenings and book and CD sales. Around 30 exhibitor stalls will display and sell a vivid array of beautiful craft and artworks while the Book Café Bookshop will be offering an unrivalled selection of local music CDs and books by local and African authors. Book Café welcomes all for this fun-filled day; perfect for family and friends to enjoy. Entry is free for ALL!
