The Boston Marathon training: Tempo Run 1 mile easy 4 miles at 80% effort 1 mile easy It was a cool morning, so that was a nice change here in Southern California! 49 degrees when I set out for my run at 8:00 AM. Still a bit windy, which makes the tempo run difficult to maintain the designated pace, so I kept an eye on my heart rate during the windy miles. Once I turned around and was running with the wind, I was able to get my pace where I wanted it to be. No rest during a tempo, running all 4 miles at the desired pace. If you are trying to increase speed, then tempo and intervals are a must.
