The Brandes Scholarship Program is designed to educate young people between 16 and 22 years of age about the world of investing and to introduce the personality traits that are outlined in the Know-Your-Client (KYC) form—an information form you need to fill out to open an investment account. The program gives students the opportunity to win one of ten $1,000 scholarships and includes a multiple-choice money personality quiz with an essay-based question. In February 2010, the Canadian government launched a task force to look into the financial literacy of Canadians. This task force released the findings in February 2011 in a report entitled, “Canadians and Their Money.” Their report makes recommendations on how to improve financial literacy for all Canadians. The Brandes Scholarship Program was created in response to the recommendations of the Task Force on Financial Literacy. The purpose of the program is to promote financial literacy and responsibility, especially among younger Canadians, and to provide financial assistance for students pursuing post-secondary education.
