The British Dietetic Association (BDA) revealed its annual list - TopicsExpress

The British Dietetic Association (BDA) revealed its annual list of the top five celebrity diets to avoid in 2015: Drinking your own urine (Bear Grylls!), Paleo, Sugar Free, Vegan Before 6 (VB6) and clay cleanse. https://bda.uk/news/view?id=39&x[0]=news/list I think you see the obvious probs with the first, and I prefer a clay cleanse on my face than my insides! The middle 3 have some element of excluded foods (although in VB6 its only before 6pm). Sugar free, popularised here by IQS & Sweet Poison, has a focus on sugar or more accurately, fructose in foods. Great news for those that are bona fide fructose intolerant as there are some great recipes in the IQS books. Great for those that realise they are consuming too much refined sugars and generally providing healthy main meal recipes. But substituting a whack load of dextrose or rice malt syrup doesnt necessarily healthify a meal. And while it has highlighted the sugar load in juices, smoothies, dried fruit etc., demonising whole fruit that has a high sugar content but otherwise contains valuable vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, and may be served in smaller quantities, is something to consider. I like the concept of Mark Bittmans VB6 (eating plant based foods before 6pm) but the high legume/lentil content of vegan diets may not suit those with FODMAPs. I dismiss the BDAs inclusion of this diet on the diets to avoid list, based on the premise that the danger here is, post-6pm becomes a window of opportunity to hoover up a myriad of foods high in calories, saturated fat and packed with added salt and sugar, undoing your earlier healthier choices. Hmm, do they think were all stupid? Paleo? This diet, or more accurately the marketing of this diet, in Australia is a hot topic. There are so many flavours of Paleo that defining it is bound to have some one jump up and comment. Fair to say, like the sugar free diets it prioritises real, fresh, unprocessed food. Which is fantastic! It often limits or excludes grains/wheat and depending on which expert you read, grains have a beneficial or deleterious effect on health. Which takes me to Petes Paleo Way starting this week on Channel 7. Ill be watching as Im sure the food will be super yummy and give us all some great new ideas for incorporating fresh whole food into our daily lives. And Ill be listening to experts on the program with a balanced ear - knowing that they are putting one point of view forward. As always, Im interested in personalised nutrition and finding ways to improve an individuals health. Which may be one of these diets, a combination or something completely different.
