The British made certain on the eve of their departure that power went to that conservative element in the country that had played no real part in the struggle for independence Harold Smith was selected to oversee the rigging of Nigerias first election, so that its compliant friends(Northern Nigeria) would win power, dominate the country, and serve the British interest after independence- Chinua Achebes THERE WAS A COUNTRY.
