The Brown Velvet Awards, seek to recognise, acknowledge and applaud the achievements of our community. Anyone, of Zimbabwean, mixed race, ORIGIN, that has excelled, qualifies. The Brown Velvet Awards are the brainchild of Zimbabwean born and raised, Tracey Jane Bell CEO of Brown Velvet Limited …..Tracey felt that our community had made a significant contribution to Zimbabwe in all fields and this contribution had by and large gone unrecognised. It was felt that we needed to identify these folk for their outstanding achievements and accomplishments. The kernel of the idea was floated on Facebook initially and there was an overwhelming response from the community in the diaspora and Zimbabwe as a whole .Categories were identified to recognise the diverse activities this community has shown and excelled at…Names of outstanding achievers were put forward by an enthusiastic Facebook audience and from these names finalists were then selected. Voting was done by clicking like under the finalists picture and a final five automatically emerged. From the final five the adjudicators were called upon to choose an overall award recipient based on 50 % of the Facebook tallies, information received and historical facts supplied by the community During this whole process names were put forward of community achievers who perhaps did not share as much limelight as others but nonetheless made a valuable contribution. The honorary list was not exhaustive but representative of the excellent work and service provided by numerous individuals across Zimbabwe. The Brown Velvet awards are not just about academic achievement, but also to acknowledge and applaud all skill and talent. They acknowledge selflessness, they acknowledge sacrifice. The effect of these achievements, need not have been to our community exclusively, as widespread as it is, so has the effect of our talent and deeds. One of the purposes, is to cause pride to rise up, and to influence the future generation of our community, to break the limits of the mind, by exposing previous as well as current trailblazers.
